Construction contracts are either negotiated or won through competitive bidding. We are licensed as a general contractor and subcontractor. Our company is on a list of preferred contractors for the Charlottesville area and has developed long-standing relationships with a number of general contractors that manage large construction projects in the vicinity. Design Electric’s proven track record and established relationships with construction companies are helpful in winning contracts.

As noted above, our clients are primarily general contractors and construction managers, as well as industrial companies. Although our business focuses on the large commercial and industrial construction market in the greater Charlottesville area, especially the University of Virginia, our business is spread over a wide assortment of client and projects.

In 1999 we began offering installation and maintenance services for communication equipment used with cell phone towers. Design Telecommunications, Design Electric's wholly-owned subsidiary, performs a variety of services related to the installation and maintenance of cellular telephone equipment at tower sites.

In 2022 we opened a new location in the heart of Harrisonburg. Our 9,000-square-foot warehouse and office space, place us in the most ideal location to continue supporting JMU as well as current and new industrial clients in Harrisonburg and The Shenandoah Valley.

Over time our company has continued to grow. What began in 1982 with just a few people has expanded to a work force of over 250 employees 32 years later. Our goal is to continue to provide the best possible electrical service to our customers in the Central and Western Virginia area, as well as the best possible telecommunications service to our customers in the Mid-Atlantic region.
